A Hidden Gem on the French Coast: Why We Keep Returning to the Beach House Restaurant

We’ve been going to the south of France for casual family surf/beach vacations for years and our favorite restaurant there is the Beach House in Anglet, France.

We usually stay in Biarritz or neighboring St Jean de Luz and we explore from there. We are definitely casual surfers so we search out and find small, gentle waves and spend the day at the beach. In the evenings we are always on the hunt for good food and an experience.

On our first trip to Biarritz, we set out one evening to see one of France’s more hardcore surf spots – Hossegor. On our way back and searching now for good food, we stopped, purely by chance, in the small town of Anglet – primarily because it was on the water.

The town was busy, mostly with locals out enjoying a warm summer evening and watching the sunset over the local beach. We were looking for a place to have dinner and stumbled upon the Beach House restaurant.

We enjoyed our dinner so much that we ended up going back a second time on that trip and at least once on every subsequent trip. That first night, we all ordered something different from the menu and while everyone was perfectly happy with their choice, it was my dish that we went back for. Yep, we all ordered the same thing on our second visit – Nasi Goreng. Of course, they knew we were tourists since only one of us speaks French, but I think they were confused when we all ordered the same dish!

Nasi Goreng

Everything about the  Beach House was perfect. The people, the decor both inside and out, and of course the food was spectacular.

None of us had ever had Nasi Goreng which is an Indonesian fried rice dish typically served with a meat and some vegetables. Our meat was marinated chicken grilled on skewers. The fried rice was topped with a fried egg. But what makes Nasi Goreng so unique is the healthy dose of kecap manis. Kecap manis is a savory and sweet sauce made from fermented soy sauce, palm sugar, and spices. It was an absolutely delicious meal and a very memorable evening.

We’ve since tried to replicate the meal at home and while it’s always been good, it somehow doesn’t measure up to the Beach House. I guess the sun setting over the ocean on a warm summer evening might have something to do with it.

The entrance to the restaurant is right across from the beach and has a wonderful setting from the moment you walk up. First, there’s a good truck (that serves a few small bites), and a large firepit. There’s also a beautiful herb garden, a boat that is sort of a bar and serves juice smoothies and take-away food. It really is the place of dreams.

Inside the restaurant is the perfect mix of hygge and eclectic beach decor. Simple vases with wildflowers and herbs, tea lights everywhere, and chic beach decor on white-shaped walls. It’s the perfect spot for a memorable evening.

In the back past the indoor bar, there are big comfortable benches with cushions and a pool for those really hot days. There are so many options for seating you could easily find a comfortable spot for whatever mood you are searching for.

The Pool Bar

The Beach House restaurant in Anglet, France is more than just a restaurant—it’s a feeling. It’s the kind you chase when you travel: unplanned moments, local charm, and food so good it becomes a reason to go. back. It’s a reminder that the best travel memories often come from wandering off the beaten path and following the sunset. We will be talking about this place for years to come. It’s why we travel…to search out beautiful places with lovely people and delicious food.
